Visual Supports Buyer's Guides - In progress!
For children with speech delays, autism spectrum disorders and other communication disorders, the inability to effectively communicate choices or feelings often leads to stressful frustration, tantrumming, acting out and other difficult behaviors. And it's stressful for parents too.
Visual communication support systems made with photos, picture symbols, PECs (picture exchange communication system), visual schedules, calendars, communication boards and augmentative communication devices (AAC) all play an important role in helping our children be active participants in home, school and community life. When provided consistently across environments, visual supports can help children develop independence, self-esteem and social skills. This guide was prepared to help you get started using visual supports using low-cost products; some you may already have around your home!
